The word 'fragrance' is a legal loophole — and here's everything it's hiding

The FTG Team · March 5, 2026

If you've ever seen the word "fragrance" on a product label, you probably didn't think twice. But that single word is one of the biggest loopholes in cosmetic regulation.

"A single product listing 'fragrance' as an ingredient can contain anywhere from 10 to 300+ undisclosed chemicals — including known allergens, hormone disruptors, and respiratory irritants."

The loophole, explained

In the United States, the FDA does not require companies to disclose the individual ingredients that make up a product's fragrance. Under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, fragrance formulations are considered "trade secrets."

How to read labels

  • Avoid: "Fragrance," "parfum," "aroma"
  • Look for: "Fragrance-free" (not "unscented")
  • Check: The EWG Skin Deep database

You shouldn't need a chemistry degree to know what you're putting on your skin.
